The English Speaking Contest of the 2018-2019 Academic Year

The English Speaking Contest of the 2018-2019 Academic Year

With the aim of providing an exciting and useful playground for Bac Lieu University students in general and Education Faculty students in particular to improve their English skills, to boost their confidence and to develop their interest in learning English, as well as offering the students a great chance to show their linguistic and intellectual competence, the Education Faculty held the English Speaking Contest in the academic year 2018-2019.

The contestants were divided into 2 groups: Group A consisting of non English-majored students and Group B having English-majored students. The English Speaking Contest consisted of 3 rounds: a class round, a qualifying round and a final round.

After the class round, in the qualifying round which was held on April 10th, 2019, at the 2nd Campus of Bac Lieu University, the 75 selected contestants had been challenged with presenting on a chosen topic (for non English-majored students) and on a randomly selected topic (for English-majored students) under the judgment of the Foreign Language Division members. The 12 best contestants continued to show their talents in the final round at 6:30 p.m. on April 20th, 2019. The Panel of Judges of this round included Mr. Nguyen Van Ut, Ms. Nguyen Thi Sang and Ms. Vo Thi Ngoc Huyen.

The final round comprised two parts. In the first part, within 5-8 minutes the contestants delivered their impressive speeches regarding HOT topics such as environment, English language, future career, global citizen, social networks, unemployment and happiness. They had to make a great effort, obtain a deep understanding of their topic and decide how to express their ideas logically. Last but not at least, they must have a highly rich source of vocabulary to show their superiority over the other competitors. In the second part, their duty was to answer the Panel of Judges’ questions confidently and convincingly. It was so hard to complete the task perfectly because of its higher difficulty level combined with less preparation time.

With their good English skills, extensive knowledge, natural voices, proper pronunciation and beautiful PowerPoint presentations, the contestants created a confident and active style of presenting and answering the thorny questions as well as made a deep impression on the Panel of Judges.

Giving a speech at the contest, Ms. Nguyen Thi Sang highly appreciated the contestants’ efforts during the three fully tense rounds and made useful remarks on their eloquent abilities together with gave some advice on how to promote their self-confidence and creativity in studying English and how to give better presentations.

After nervously waiting, the contestants were extremely happy when their names were called. The contest results were as follow:

Group A

  • 1 first prize: Lam Thi Ngoc Tam (11DTCNH)
  • 2 second prizes: Ong Thi My Tram (11DTCNH), Nguyen Nhat Khanh (11DNV)

The English Olympic Contest ended successfully. All of the contestants were pleased with the valuable experience and knowledge they gained in each round. Organizing this contest is one of EF’s efforts to contribute positively and effectively to the development of the English learning movement among BLU students.
